Sister Freda owns and operates a free medical center just outside of Kitale. She also grows maize and beans to feed her patients and their children.<br /></p><p>The children in the surrounding villages walk barefoot for miles each day to reach Sister Freda's because their parents know that she will feed and school them. Sister Freda is not a Catholic nun. The people of Kitale call her "Sister" because of her great caring and the way she treats everyone like family.<br /></p><p>Many of the children have swollen, oozing sores on their feet from "chiggers." Chiggers are tiny mites that live in the damp soil and enter the feet through any break in the skin. Chigger infestation is one of many preventable problems these children face daily. I believe this type of shoe is best because they are easily cleaned, light weight, and will provide excellent protection in dry or rainy conditions.<br /></p><p>My daughter and I will be returning to Kitale in July <strong></strong> to assist at an eye care clinic.
